Now, she comes back to visit her family at age 21 - but she does not still want to join the Amish. Can she does that? just to visit her family from time to time? or as soon as she comes back she has to join the church?

Hello,
For many years I've have a great fascination for Amish culture, and I've probably seen every documentary and TV show ever done on the communities. After watching a few episode of the "Out Of Order" series, I have a question: Why does it seem that many of the ex-Amish young men use so much profanity. It seems like every other sentence has one curse word or another. Is it just one form of rebellion or a way of trying to strip the old ways from their minds? I'm just really perplexed by what what seems to be an "all or nothing" way of living; for instance, why do most of the teens seems to get so totally out of control with partying and the worst aspects of English culture during Rumspringa? In truth, that's just not the way most Americans live on a regular basis. And what's up with the Amish tradition of young couples sharing the girl's bed before marriage? Traditional American (English) families would never allow such a temptation. Is it supposed to help one test or increase their willpower? I guess I'm asking why I never see depicted on TV ex-Amish adopting more the lifestyle of typical religious families in America, who dress modestly, don't drink or drug, don't have sex outside or marriage, or use foul language, attend church regularly, etc. Maybe ex-Amish living that way just don't make for good TV(?)

Hello, My name is Kevin and I have always been interested in the Amish culture after taking a few vacations to Penn. where I learned a little bit about who Amish people are. I have also been watching "Amish out of Order" on Nat-Geo among other shows on tv about Amish and Ex-Amish. Im myself am English and I feel that I am more than lucky to have almost everything I could need as far as clothing and other material items. I was just wondering if their was any way I could donate these items to the young Ex-Amish who are trying to begin their new lives outside the Amish community. We are looking for a few former Amish carpenters to participate in an episode of a new Animal Planet docu series. The show follows famed Treehouse Builder Pete Nelson as he builds amazing Treehouse for his clients across the country. We have a build in Glenmont, OH coming up and want to represent the Amish influences by having Amish builders participate. 2. How large is the subculture and are they bound to particular geographical sites (i.e. location)?
3. What (if any) distinguish this subculture physically from the wider population?
4. Are there particular forms of dress patterns (or other key physical characteristics) of the subculture and how is it associated with their particular values?
5. What are the mores, folkways, and values endemic to this subculture?
6. What forms of social action (i.e. meaningful behavior) do they engage in and how are these actions different from the larger population?
7. Do the engage in rituals and if so, what are they and what do they mean?
8. Identify and explain the significance of symbols that the subculture may use?
9. How do they communicate with each other? Do they have their own codes and forms of communication that are different from standard forms of communication? Find out the secret forms of communication.

Horse auction in Lancaster County PA: PLEASE someone help me find it.

Hello:

I am and English person, well…..actually I was born in Bulgaria; now I live near NYC.

In the mid-90's my then wife and myself took a weekend trip to Amish County in PA and the owner of the Bed & Breakfast that we stayed in suggested strongly an indoor Friday night auction that she said was "not for tourists" and was "extraordinary". We attended and I found the second qualification to be an understatement - it was a dreamlike unforgettable experience being transported in time in an instant.

I remember a HUGE barn like structure with amphitheater seating and the auction happening at the far end of where we sat. There was a pulley line system that was used for paperwork to be transported across and up the whole space to a small office at the top of the interior.

I was totally enraptured and attempted not to gawk. There were a lot of Amish teenagers who were attending the auction as a social event; they were fabulous to watch.

Unfortunately I didn't keep any notes and didn't take any photographs (even though I am a photographer) at the strong urging of my ex- ("PLEASE respect their rules beliefs - no photography is allowed")

Another shocking visual thing I remember from that weekend (somewhere in the vicinity of said auction) was a parking lot jam-packed with cars, all of them black and all of them with the shiny chrome parts also painted black….we were told these belong to Mennonites.

If anyone can help me identify the specific horse auction place (if it still exists, of course) I will be very grateful.

I was just wondering if any ex Amish haved moved to California or have concidered it. I live in Northern California and I know with many Amish only having an 8th grade education that there are many timber jobs here that pay well and do not require an education.

I am looking for Amish teenagers on Rumspringa or ex Amish church members.

I am specifically doing a research project on the Rumspringa tradition.

A few years back, in Graves County KY, nine Amish men were pulled over and cited for not having a large, reflecting orange triangle prominently displayed on their horse-drawn buggy.

KRS 189.820 (2):

2) The slow-moving vehicle emblem shall be displayed as herein provided on all slow-moving vehicles operated day or night upon the public roads within the Commonwealth of Kentucky, no later than January 1, 1973.

Violation of this statute is considered a criminal traffic violation.
